…I became a mother. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, but also the happiest.

“What does two lines mean again?”
My roommate just asked me a question that would ultimately change my life, and I was temporarily frozen.
After what seemed like an eternity, I was finally able to mutter a response.
“It means that I’m pregnant,” I said.
She stood there and looked at me with an “Oh God” look on her face.
A month prior to that, I broke up with my child’s father. Now, I’m pregnant.
I remember the conversations that would follow:
- One with my ex.
- One with my mother.
- One with my father.
“Fun times,” said no one ever!
Turns out I was way more pregnant than I thought.
The stress of being a college student caused me to spot (sorry if that’s TMI), so I never thought twice about being pregnant. By my second doctor’s appointment, I was told what the sex of the baby was.

All the old wives tale stuff I did said I would have a boy, so after my ultrasound, my mother started adding florals to the blue quilt she was making. I immediately started buying pink, pink and more pink! I was going to have a daughter!
One of my favorite ultrasound photos of my daughter is this one:
She looks like she’s praying, and I while I had no idea what the future held for us, I knew in my heart that she was a gift from God.
I didn’t know just by looking at her ultrasound picture what kind of person my daughter would grow up to be. I knew she would be amazing regardless, but God already knew she would grow up to be a great kid! Today, she’s talented, smart, funny and caring. She’s also a great friend and athlete.
As a teenager, we definitely have our moments, but she we get by just fine. Happy birthday to my daughter! I love you to Pluto and back! You make me so proud to be your mom.
