Cover me in sunshine.

We’ve had some dreary days this past week. It is February, after all, but I’m definitely ready for Spring and more sunny days.

The other morning was cloudy and drizzly, and I knew I needed some feel-good music to keep me positive as I headed to doggie daycare, then work.

When I was married, my youngest bonus kids had their own playlist on my phone. Whenever the three of us were headed somewhere, or while waiting for the bus on a cold morning in my car, they would ask, “Beth, can we listen to our playlist.” I usually said yes, unless we had listened to it A LOT lately.

The songs on the list range from Bon Jovi and Toto to Blake Shelton and The Jackson 5. I was determined to raise those kids with an appreciation for all genres of music.

Bristol, who was 10 when my ex and I got divorced, loved me like a child loves a mother, and vice versa. We had a special bond and I miss her dearly. She even wrote me a song once about how much I meant to her. One of the songs on the kids’ playlist was Cover Me In Sunshine, sung by P!nk and her daughter Willow. Bristol would ask to listen to it so she and I could duet the lyrics. I would sing the P!nk parts and Bristol would sing Willow’s parts.

When that song came on this morning, my heart was beaming and made up for the cloudy skies. I got a little mopey on Valentine’s Day when the weather was yucky, but after listening to that song today and thinking about the wonderful times I had with my bonus kids (all 6 of them), I decided that I wasn’t going to let the nasty weather impact my outlook on the day.

Sometimes it takes the right song to get us out of the funk.

What’s a song that brightens your day?
